Tension enveloped the premises of a
furniture company, Alibert Products Nigeria
Limited, Egbe, Lagos on Wednesday as
hundreds of their workers protested the
death of their colleague who was crushed
by a factory machine.
Investigation revealed that the
victim, 20-year old Michael Aghanemu, had
been operating the machine for about a
year since he was employed.
The late Aghanemu’s colleagues told our
correspondent that the machine operator
made a ‘mistake’ and the machine trapped
his hand and before help could come, he
bled to death.
At the nearby hospital where he was rushed
to, doctors merely certified him dead, as
they were helpless.
His corpse was then deposited at Isolo
General Hospital for autopsy.
Immediately other workers learnt of
Aghanemu’s death, they became angry and
protested the management of Alibert was
forced to shut down the company.
Workers blamed the management for
negligence. They claimed that the company’s
machine has killed at least 26 operators in
the last two or three years because the
company paid little or no attention to
security or protection of human lives.
The management called in policemen from
nearby Ikotun Police Divisional Headquarters
to forestall breakdown of law and order.
