A sachet water seller identified as Mrs.
Anulugwo Uchena was yesterday crushed to
death in Egbeda, Lagos State by a trailer
with registration number XS 298 LND.
A witness said that the mother of
five was crushed to death while the trailer
driver was trying to avoid a bad portion of
the road abandoned by Plycon Construction
Company, the outfit that got the road
construction contract from Lagos State
Government.
“It was really sad because this woman
wouldn’t have died if not for the nonchalant
attitude of the construction company. The
trailer driver was trying to avoid a bad
portion of the road, and rather than cause
multiple casualties by hitting commercial
vehicles at the bus stop, he swerved to the
other side where the woman was crushed.
She died on the spot,” the witness said.
The incident has however caused anger
among youths of the area who have given
the authorities of Plycon a 41-day ultimatum
to complete work on the road or face
massive protest from the youths.
President of the Egbeda/Akowonjo youths,
Wahab Ogunji, otherwise known as Ajere,
noted that the youths will not want to take
the law into their hands, but urged the
authorities concerned to make sure the
road construction is completed within the
stipulated time “because we won’t fold our
arms and watch our people die
unnecessarily again.”
Ajere therefore called on the state
government to assist the children of the late
Mrs. Uchena. “This will go a long way
because the deceased was a divorcee, and
she was the only one taking care of her five
children before the untimely death.”
The body of the deceased woman has been
deposited in the mortuary.
